David only took up playing the soprano cornet in 2001 after a long career as a cornet and trumpet player. Since then all of his contest performances have had glowing remarks from judges or www.4barsrest.com website. 4barsrest reviews competitions and concerts in an unbiased and informed way.

4barsrest has stated: “Soprano David Notley impressed us again as he did at Pontins in the autumn. One to watch, we think.” And: Some excellent sop work throughout was the highlight for us of a well-rounded show that had some moments of real quality about it.

David is a Former assistant principal Cornet of 'The Black Dyke Band', 'Travelsphere' (GUS), 'Brighouse and Rastrick', H&H Cougar (NZ) and was in 2001 principal Cornet of the 'Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain' (soloist in Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and USA/Canada tours).

He has also been principal cornet of Kew (Australia) & Matthews Norfolk Brass (UK).

David has recorded CDs with B&R “On the bandstand”, Cambridge Co-op, Travelsphere Holidays and Black Dyke “Façade” and Rock Bands including “Swervedriver” and “The Music Men”

“The Music Men”( www.wearethemusicmen.com/history.html) appeared on Australian national television regularly and sold thousands of CDs.   David also appeared on “Neighbours” in the brass band behind Harold Bishop when Harold played the Tuba!

Winning many titles and awards as a player and conductor all over the world, David has appeared as soloist or conductor in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Canada and USA. He has also been musical director of cruise bands and has worked in the Caribbean and sung for money!

Because of having a lung disease called “Sarcoidosis” and having damaged his jaw and lower lip in a car crash in 1992 David has studied musculature, embouchures and breathing and used his studies for the Dissertation shown on this site. He is available to help others with problems in note production, embouchure change and increasing range.

David is currently a brass teacher working for Cambridgeshire County Council “CIMA” teaching over 200 pupils in 17 schools.
